Hours-long car chase forces brief closure of 405 Freeway
A male driver led authorities on an hours-long car chase across Los Angeles County freeways and streets Monday afternoon, sideswiping at least one vehicle before coming to a stop on the southbound 405 Freeway north of Long Beach, the California Highway Patrol and television news reports said.
The CHP closed both directions of the 405 near the 710 Freeway for 10 to 15 minutes, starting about 1 p.m., said CHP Officer Peter Bishop.
The chase began hours earlier when South Gate police spotted a man driving a Kia SUV that had been reported stolen, Bishop said. South Gate police called the CHP at 10:41 a.m. and the state agency soon took control of the chase.

Television news helicopters captured the relatively mundane pursuit over the next two hours. At one point, cameras showed the driver sideswipe another car on Valley Boulevard. At another time, he swerved onto a sidewalk and narrowly missed striking a bicyclist.
Eventually the man drove onto the 405, stopping just south of the 710. The CHP stopped traffic in both directions as the man remained in his vehicle. After about 10 minutes, the man got out and stepped backward slowly toward officers, who took him into custody without apparent incident.
The CHP did not release the man’s name.
