UFC postpones scheduled Jose Aldo-Chad Mendes fight at Staples Center

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has decided to cancel its Aug. 2 featherweight title fight at Staples Center between injured champion Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes, postponing the bout to an unfinalized location likely in October, UFC Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta said.

“We’d like to go back there, but we have to see how it plays out,” Fertitta said.

Staples Center General Manager Lee Zeidman said an initial discussion about Oct. 11 wouldn’t allow for the fight at Staples due to a sold-out Pitbull-Enrique Iglesias concert, but Oct. 18 and Oct. 25 are open.

The postponement “is very unfortunate, and very disappointing, but we’re good partners with the UFC and we’re confident they’ll return here quickly,” Zeidman said.

Fertitta said that while “all options were on the table,” he couldn’t make a fight that would meet the quality he sought in asking fans to purchase a pay-per-view.

Fertitta said although there was some post-fight anger from him and UFC President Dana White aimed at UFC producers for urging broadcaster Joe Rogan to question Ronda Rousey about filling the Aug. 2 date in the seconds after her Saturday technical knockout of Alexis Davis at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Rousey indeed might have been an option.

In addition to the cut she suffered on her thumb from belting Davis with a punch, however, it was discovered Rousey’s thumb is broken and she’ll need an estimated nine weeks to heal, Fertitta said.

“A number of other fighters called and said they’d be willing to fight,” Fertitta said.

Aldo-Mendes is a rematch of a January 2012 fight the Brazilian Aldo won by first-round technical knockout. Mendes, of Sacramento, answered with five consecutive victories, four by knockout.

The UFC’s next pay-per-view is now an Aug. 30 rematch between newly crowned bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw and the man he beat in May, Renan Barao. That fight will be in Sacramento.

After that, light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones will defend his belt in a rematch against Alexander Gustafsson Sept. 27 in Las Vegas at a location to be announced.
