Clippers’ Danny Granger, Glen Davis plan to opt out of contracts

Clippers forwards Danny Granger and Glen Davis have informed the team that they do not plan on opting in on their 2014-15 contracts, according to NBA officials.

Though Granger will become a free agent, there is mutual interest on both sides of him returning to the Clippers. Davis, who was poised to make $1.4 million next season, had until Tuesday to exercise his rights to opt in or out, according to the officials.

One official said Granger likes the “winning culture” the Clippers now have under Coach Doc Rivers, and that’s why Granger would like to return to the team if financial terms can be agreed upon when the free-agency periods begin on July 1 – 9:01 p.m. PDT on June 30. Granger’s current contract was set to pay him $1.36 million for next season.

Davis is going to see what he can get on the free-agent market, the official said.

The 6-9 Granger, who signed as a free agent with the Clippers on Feb. 28 after securing a buyout from Philadelphia, played in 12 regular-season games with the Clippers, averaging 8.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 16.2 minutes.

Granger missed the final nine regular-season games with the Clippers recovering from a strained left hamstring.

He played in all 13 of the Clippers’ playoff games, but Granger averaged just 2.6 points on 27.5% shooting, 22.7% from three-point range.

Granger played in just five games during the 2012-13 season with Indiana because of left knee surgery and just 29 games during the 2013-14 season with the Pacers because of a strained left calf. He was traded to the 76ers on Feb. 20.

Granger has been working out at the Clippers’ practice facility and is feeling healthy.

Davis was signed by the Clippers on Feb. 24 after he got a buyout from the Orlando Magic.

He played in 23 regular-season games with the Clippers, averaging 4.2 points and 3 rebounds in 13.4 minutes. Davis averaged 3.8 points and 2.8 rebounds over 12.2 minutes during 13 playoff games with the Clippers.
