News Corp. Deputy Chief Operating Officer James Murdoch was compared to a mafia kingpin by a member of Parliament.

Labor party member Tom Watson was one of the most aggressive and theatrical questioners of Murdoch at a Thursday hearing probing a culture of phone hacking at News Corp.’s now-closed News of the World tabloid.

Watson asked Murdoch about his knowledge of how the mafia operates with regards to buying off officials and silencing witnesses. Murdoch replied that he was not an aficionado of the mafia.

‘You must be the first mafia boss in history who didn’t know he was running a criminal enterprise,’ Watson then cracked.

Murdoch seemed slightly taken aback and told Watson the comment was offensive.
