After 16 years of going rock steady with Sony’s PlayStation consoles, independent game developer Insomniac said it will sow its oats on the Microsoft’s Xbox 360 with a game to be published by Electronic Arts.

Insomniac President Ted Price said his studio isn’t breaking up with Sony, but rather ‘reaching new players.’ For the lion’s share of its existence, Insomniac has developed games that could only be played on Sony’s PlayStation platform. Many of its creations became best-sellers, including Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and, to a lesser extent, Resistance.

In return, Sony, which marketed and provided much of the financing for Insomniac’s games, received exclusive titles that gave it a crucial competitive edge in selling consoles.

Price declined to say whether his Burbank studio will continue to make games exclusively for Sony. He also would not give details on the studio’s Xbox title.

‘We have a very loyal following on the PS3, and we would like to bring the same experience to the Xbox 360,’ Price said.

Under its one-game deal with Electronic Arts, Insomniac would own the intellectual property and have full creative control over how the game is developed, while EA would market and distribute the game.
