‘Daily Show’s’ Samantha Bee gets her own comedy show on TBS

Longtime “Daily Show” correspondent Samantha Bee will host a new show on TBS that sounds like a potential competitor to Comedy Central’s flagship late-night show.

The new series is still in an early development stage, but TBS said in a statement Thursday that it will provide Bee with a platform to “apply her smart satirical point of view to current and relevant issues.”

A TBS spokeswoman said the format, frequency and launch date of Bee’s program are still being decided.

Bee and her husband, Jason Jones, will co-executive produce the program. The couple already has a deal to create a sitcom for TBS that is slated to debut in the fall.

TBS may see a program fronted by Bee as an opportunity to pick up viewers who will miss Jon Stewart once he ends his 16-year-plus run as host of “The Daily Show” later this year.

Bee is the longest running “Daily Show” correspondent; she joined the program in 2003.
