Morning Fix: Sin City woos Hollywood! Rosie returning to ‘The View’?

The Skinny: So I started yesterday evening at a big industry party in a huge mansion above Beverly Hills and ended it eating at a taco truck on Olympic and La Brea. Only in L.A. kids, only in L.A. Today’s roundup includes a look at how Las Vegas is wooing movie and TV production and a shakeup at ABC Family.

Daily Dose: There has been a lot of speculation these days about whether Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox will make a run at Time Warner. But few of the stories trace the roots of that speculation back to the original source -- an analyst report by Tony Wible of Janney Capital Markets released last month that was filled with hypothetical mergers. Sure, it could happen, but there is no evidence yet that 21st Century Fox has made any overtures to Time Warner or that any are coming (nor did Wible suggest there were). If Murdoch and Time Warner Chief Jeff Bewkes want to have some fun, they should make sure to be photographed together at the Allen & Co. conference this week. Then the rumors will really hit fifth gear.

What’s shot in Vegas. Las Vegas isn’t looking to woo just big gamblers these days. Sin City is also aggressively pitching itself to Hollywood. “Think Like a Man Too,” the hit Kevin Hart comedy, was largely shot at Caesars Palace. Also getting into the act is Wynn, which is where Sony filmed practically all of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” Several reality shows including “Pawn Stars” are shot in Vegas as well. Keeping it in the family. Steven Spielberg is leaning toward an insider to replace Stacey Snider, the co-chairman and chief executive of DreamWorks who is leaving for a senior position at 20th Century Fox. Variety reports that Spielberg has been spending lots of time lately working with DreamWorks Production President Holly Bario and that she may rise up when Snider departs.

Divorce in the family. Kate Juergens, the longtime head of programming for ABC’s Family Channel, is leaving the network, as is scheduling and program acquisitions executive Lynn Stepanian. Their departures come just a few months after the arrival of a new president at the network -- Tom Ascheim. No replacements were named for Juergens or Stepanian and their jobs may be consolidated. Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. TMZ broke the news that ABC is bringing Rosie O’Donnell back to its morning talk show “The View.” O’Donnell had a brief stint on the show almost a decade ago and often clashed with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Since “The View,” O’Donnell had a high-profile talk show flop with OWN, the cable network co-owned by Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications. ABC is pretty much overhauling “The View” in the wake of Barbara Walters’ retirement and the exits of Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd. Only Whoopi Goldberg remains from last season’s team.
