TV ratings: ‘America’s Got Talent’ Part 1 finale boosts NBC to No. 1

Despite the fall returns of several TV shows, summer favorites “America’s Got Talent” and “Big Brother” dominated the viewer ratings Tuesday night among the key 18-to-49-year-old demographic.

“America’s Got Talent,” the NBC Nick Cannon-hosted show, was No. 1 among the key demo with a rating of 2.5, according to Nielsen. In Part 1 of its season finale, the show averaged roughly 11.3 million viewers.

Up 4% from last season’s Part 1 finale, the show boosted NBC to No. 1 overall and among the demographic. The network averaged 9.3 million viewers and a rating of 2.1.

Meanwhile, CBS’ privacy deprivation show “Big Brother” took second among the key demo with a rating of 2.3, on par with last week’s rating. It came in third overall with 6.8 million viewers.

The network, which also aired reruns of “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “Person of Interest,” was second among the key demographic with a rating of 1.3. It took third overall with 5.6 million viewers

On ABC, the second episode of Season 19’s “Dancing With the Stars” drew in the biggest numbers of the night.

Though down 13% from its season premiere on Monday, the show was the No. 1 most watched program of the night with roughly 12.3 million viewers. It took third among the key demo with a rating of 2.1.

According to data provided by Canvs, a social TV platform created by social-media insight firm Mashwork, the reality show generated 34,530 reaction tweets which contained emotions such as love (47.7%) and happiness (13.1%).

Fox tied for third with Univision among the key demo, averaging a rating of 1.2.

With the return of “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project,” plus another episode of its new reality show “Utopia,” the network averaged roughly 2.7 million viewers.

“The New Girl,” starring Zooey Deschanel, earned a rating of 1.6 among the key demo, up 33% from last season’s finale but down from a rating of 2.9 for last season’s fall premiere.

In its Season 4 premiere, which guest-starred Jessica Biel, the show averaged 3.1 million viewers, up 29% from the 2.4 million who tuned in to last season’s finale.

“The Mindy Project” was even with last season’s finale with a rating of 1.3 among the key demo. It was up 12% in total viewers from the finale, with 2.8 million people tuning in to watch the Season 3 debut of Mindy Kaling’s comedy.

Though down from last year’s season premiere, the show retained 81% of its “New Girl” lead in, an increase from the 65% retention rate from last year.
