James Murdoch says no evidence of 9/11 phone hacking

News Corp. Deputy Chief Operating Officer James Murdoch told Parliament that he was unaware that any victims of the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks in the United States had their voicemail accounts hacked by operatives for the conglomerate’s now-closed British tabloid News of the World.

‘A lot of work has been done on that subject, nothing confirms it,’ Murdoch told Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on Thursday. He added that he had no knowledge of the ‘substantiveness or veracity of those accusations.’

In July, the Daily Mirror, a rival tabloid to News of the World, ran a story suggesting that News of the World reporters may have hacked into the voicemail accounts of victims of the attacks. News Corp. has consistently said it was unaware of any such activities.

The story led Congress to ask the FBI to investigate the claims.
