Mid-air emergency diverts Los Angeles-bound flight to Alaska
An international flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles was diverted to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska early Wednesday after the crew declared a mid-air emergency.
Cathay Pacific Flight 884 landed at Eareckson Air Station in Shemya about 3:30 a.m. local time, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The aircraft is a Boeing 777, the FAA said.
The aircraft’s diversion was a precaution “due to smoke detected in the aircraft,” the airline said in a statement.
The flight carried 276 passengers and 18 crew members, the airline said.
The jetliner landed without incident, according to the FAA.
