Two suspected burglars were arrested in a Beverly Hills neighborhood Wednesday morning after ditching their car, forcing residents to flee and dodging police as they fled from house to house, authorities said.

Television news outlets showed a Beverly Hills police squad car rolling down a fairway at the Hillcrest Country Club golf course about 9 a.m. while others began grouping at the end of neighborhood streets around the 1500 block of Roxbury Drive in an attempt to block of the suspects’ escape path.

For at least an hour, officers searched for a man and woman who had allegedly burglarized a home and commited a hit-and-run during their getaway before abandoning their car in the neighborhood.

The pair had plenty of time and space to look for a hiding spot because no officers were within sight of them when they left the car, said police Lt. Lincoln Hoshino. Police lost track of the vehicle after a short chase but found it again thanks to a KTLA-TV helicopter, he said.

By the time police arrived on the property, the two alleged burglars had roamed the backyard and side of the house before disappearing under a tree canopy, video showed. Officers protected by a police dog and a shield worked their way through the area and at one point rescued three people who were inside a home, according to police.

“We’re fairly experienced in searching large yards … this is our bread and butter,” Hoshino said.

Officers originally began chasing the two when they refused to pull over for a traffic stop after police spotted the car in an alley, Hoshino said. The fleeing pair struck another car during the initial chase but kept going, he said.

After roaming the home where they parked, the pair allegedly ended up breaking into three homes in the area while trying to hide, Hoshino said. They were caught running from a house as police closed in, he said. The two were arrested about 10 a.m., Hoshino said.
