Young mother with her child robbed at Costa Mesa drive-through ATM

A gunman robbed a young mother who was with her child outside a Costa Mesa bank, according to police.

The 20-year-old Corona del Mar resident was at a drive-up ATM on Wednesday at the Wells Fargo at 2970 Harbor Blvd. when the suspect approached her car at about 4:40 p.m., police said. He pointed a handgun at her and demanded $500 cash.

Afraid for herself and the child in the back seat, the woman withdrew as much money as she could — $300 — and handed it over, police said. Neither she nor the child was hurt.

The robber fled on foot, and the woman called 911 after driving a short distance, police said.

Soon after, police received a call about a man matching the robber’s description who had a gun inside a Chase Bank branch in the 100 block of East 17th Street in Costa Mesa. The man left before officers arrived. He did not rob anyone at the Chase Bank, police said.

Authorities described the man as white, in his mid-20s, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. He was unshaven and wore a black beanie, black jacket with a hood, a black scarf and sunglasses, police said.

Investigators ask that anyone with information about the suspect call Det. Mario Garcia at (714) 754-5363.
