A Compton man was sentenced to 16 years in prison Wednesday for shaking and slamming his 6-month-old son to the floor. He later died at a hospital.

David Gomez, 26, pleaded no contest the same day to the voluntary manslaughter of his son, Abel Gomez, and was immediately sentenced, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

As part of a plea agreement, he allegedly admitted causing great bodily injury to his son Oct. 3, 2012, according to prosecutors.

Gomez’s plea came as prosecutors were trying him for a second time on the same charges after his first case was declared a mistrial, Santiago said.

The defendant was reportedly taking care of Abel and his other son, age 2, while his wife was working, prosecutors said.

Abel wouldn’t stop crying, so Gomez allegedly shook and slammed him to the floor.

Abel suffered a fractured skull and died at the hospital.
