A tense, hours-long standoff between an armed man and law enforcement authorities at a Norwalk mobile home park ended with the arrest of the suspect late Tuesday.

Television news footage showed tear gas enveloping the home before the 38-year-old man was taken into custody after walking out of the residence.

The suspect, whose name was not released, is on federal probation for bank robbery and pointed a weapon at law enforcement authorities as they took up positions around the home in the 12000 block of Rosecrans Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. The suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest.

About 30 homes were evacuated Tuesday evening after a multi-agency task force had swooped down on the area to arrest the man around 4:30 p.m.

Authorities said there was at least one other man inside the home.

Residents in the evacuated homes were sent to Thomas B. Moffitt Elementary School in Norwalk.
