Man trying to flee gunfire is killed in Compton, officials say

A 22-year-old man was shot to death just after midnight Thursday in Compton, making him the city’s 29th homicide over the last 12 months.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was found at 12:29 a.m. lying in the driveway of a home in the 800 block of West Maple Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Two other men who were with the victim at the time told authorities they at first thought they were hearing firecrackers, but quickly realized they were being fired at.

The victim was wounded as the men tried to flee.

No one has been arrested in connection with shooting.

The man is the 29th victim to be killed in Compton in last 12 months, according to The Times’ Homicide Report. At least 24 of those victims were shot to death.
