One man was dead and another woman was taken hostage Friday after an armed parolee fleeing Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies ran into a Pico Rivera home and exchanged gunfire with authorities.

The dead man was a bystander, and it was unclear who shot him, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Nicole Nishida.

Sheriff’s crisis negotiators were on scene to speak with the parolee, 24, who barricaded himself in the house with the hostage, Nishida said.

The parolee, who was being sought on suspicion of various felonies, fled into the home in the 9000 block of Rosehedge Drive after being pursued by a sheriff’s gang unit about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The suspect shot at deputies and deputies returned fire, Nishida said.

No deputies were hurt, and it was unclear if the suspect was injured in the gunfire. Neighboring homes were evacuated.

Authorities rushed to pull the male bystander from the area to give him medical aid, but he died at the scene.
