A maximum-security prisoner who escaped in Illinois while being transported to a San Diego-area prison was captured in Oregon on Monday.

In September, Joshua Drinnon, 36, who is serving a 17-year prison sentence for a robbery committed in San Luis Obispo County, escaped at an Illinois rest stop while being transported back to San Diego after a court appearance in Tennessee, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation release.

Drinnon was able to get out of his restraints, escape officers, scale a fence and run into a cornfield, authorities said.

About 40 days later, he was found at a homeless shelter in Ashland, Ore., and was taken into custody without incident, authorities said.

Before his escape, Drinnon was scheduled to be released on parole in 2025.
