A man was killed by a sheriff’s deputy in La Puente on Saturday night after he appeared to reach for a gun in his waistband while fleeing on foot from a routine traffic stop.

At about 9:30 p.m. the deputy pulled over a vehicle after it failed to stop at the intersection of Loukelton Street and North Ballista Avenue, said Sgt. Rich Pena of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A passenger got out of the car and ran, twice appearing to reach to his waist for a handgun, Pena said. The deputy fired several rounds at the suspect, hitting him in the chest. The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

Homicide bureau investigators recovered a handgun from the scene, Pena said. It was unclear if the driver of the vehicle was arrested.

In a separate incident early Sunday morning, deputies responded to the 4400 block of Hanstead Avenue of Lancaster, where two men were found dead in what appeared to be a drive-by or walk-by shooting, Pena said.

No additional details were available.
