Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey has asked the city of Compton to hand over important election documents for all its council members after receiving complaints against several public officials.

In a letter dated July 31, Lacey asked City Clerk Alita Godwin to provide copies of candidacy forms and statements of assets and economic interest for the mayor, four council members, city attorney, city treasurer and city clerk dating back to 2004.

In addition, Lacey requested the council agenda and meeting minutes for the appointment of City Atty. Craig Cornwell.

Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for Lacey, would not discuss whether a formal investigation of Compton’s City Hall has been launched

“We do not confirm or deny investigations,” Robison said Thursday.

The inquiry comes after a complaint was filed against Compton Mayor Aja Brown, Councilwoman Janna Zurita, Councilman Isaac Galvan and Cornwell, she said.

Robison would not discuss whether a singe complaint or multiple complaints sparked the probe.

Los Cerritos News was the first to report the records request.

Godwin said this is the second records request she has received from the district attorney’s office in the last year, but it was the first in which everyone on the dais was named.

She said the first request was processed and answered.
