Pomona police shot and wounded a gunman during a traffic stop early Sunday, police said.

The incident began when an officer conducted a traffic stop about 1:30 a.m. in the 800 block of South Buena Vista Avenue, said Deputy Lillian Peck of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The male suspect got out of the vehicle holding a handgun, Peck said.

“He did not comply with the officer’s orders, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Peck said. Details about what led to the traffic stop and what orders were given were not immediately known, she said.

The suspect was struck in the torso and transported to a hospital, Peck said. His condition was not immediately known.
