Woman on bicycle shot and killed in Compton; man wounded

A woman riding a bicycle was killed and a man was wounded when an attacker in a passing car opened fire on a Compton street, authorities said Monday.

Both victims were taken to a hospital after the shooting, which was reported around 1 p.m. in the 800 block of West Cherry Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. The condition of the man was not released, but he remained hospitalized, authorities said Monday evening.

A group of people were in a driveway at a home when the dark-colored vehicle drove by and someone inside shot at the man, hitting him in the torso, authorities said. The woman was riding the bike in front of the home when she was struck by a round.

Since January 2007, at least 231 homicides have been reported in Compton, which is the 11th-most deadly of the 270 neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, according to The Times Homicide Report database.
