Three men charged with mugging man, 87, exercising by Rose Bowl

Three men were charged Thursday with robbing an 87-year-old man and shoving him to the ground as he exercised around the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Juan Antonio Medina Martínez, 18, and Gabriel Anthony Mixco, 19, of Rowland Heights, and Dominick Tobiah Guzman, 19, of Hacienda Heights are accused of pushing down the man and taking his fanny pack March 27 in the popular exercise area, prosecutors said.

The attack occurred on West Drive near the Rose Bowl about 5 a.m. as the man was taking his morning walk. Other runners and walkers found him lying on the ground and alerted authorities. The man suffered head trauma and was taken to a hospital.

One of the alleged assailants is also accused of using the victim’s credit card to make a purchase after the robbery, prosecutors said.

The men each face felony charges of second-degree robbery and elder abuse, and Mixco faces an additional misdemeanor count of theft.

On Thursday, Martínez and Guzman pleaded not guilty to the charges, while Mixco’s arraignment was continued. They will return to the Pasadena courthouse April 28. Guzman was held in lieu of $105,000 bail while the bail for Martínez and Mixco was set at $80,000 each.

If convicted as charged, Guzman faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison, Mixco faces six years in prison and Martínez faces five years in prison.
