Bus, light-rail collisions in San Francisco leave 40 injured
Forty people were injured Friday afternoon in two separate mass transit collisions in San Francisco, authorities said. None of the injuries were life-threatening.
The first crash occurred in Japantown about 1:30 p.m. on the westbound lanes of Geary Boulevard, one of the city’s busiest east-west thoroughfares.
The collision occurred when a San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency bus driver swerved and slammed on the brakes near Webster Street to avoid hitting a dump truck that had stopped suddenly.
The evasive maneuver caused the bus to strike a second dump truck, which was also traveling west on Geary, police Sgt. Danielle Newman said in a statement.
About 20 were injured in the Japantown collision, and 12 were taken to hospitals.
Then, at about 1:50 p.m. and four miles to the southeast, a Muni light rail train collided with an 18-wheeler semi-truck that was on the tracks in Bayview.
The train was headed north on Third Street near Innes Avenue toward downtown when the northbound truck “made an illegal left-hand turn” in front of the light rail train, police spokesman Albie Esparza said.
The train derailed. Twenty people were injured, and 11 of them were taken to hospitals.
