A San Diego police officer shot and killed a 54-year-old man who police said was advancing toward the officer and threatening him with a box cutter during a late-night confrontation at a shopping center, officials said.

The officer had responded to a 911 call just after midnight about a man sitting outside a CVS Pharmacy in Mission Valley and shouting threats at employees and shoppers, officials said.

When the officer arrived, the man moved quickly toward him, ignoring several demands to drop the weapon, according to Lt. Dave Nisleit of the department’s homicide squad. The officer retreated but the man kept advancing toward him, Nisleit said.

The officer then fired “multiple rounds,” Nisleit said.

The incident was captured on the officer’s body camera, which will be reviewed, officials said.

On Monday, the Police Department identified the dead man as Robert Arthur Hober, and the officer as Eric Oberndorfer, a 15-year veteran of the department.
