Police were looking Wednesday for a driver believed to have been involved in an illegal street race that killed another driver in Gardena.

The incident occurred about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday near Vermont Avenue and Redondo Beach Boulevard, where a Honda van traveling west on 155th Street was struck by a black Ford Mustang that was racing another vehicle, according to the Gardena Police Department.

The driver of the Ford, a 50-year-old male, was ejected from his vehicle and died, police said. A female passenger and the driver of the van were taken to a hospital.

Police said the other car involved in the race, a 2008 or newer white Audi A4, left the scene heading south on Vermont before officers arrived.

Gardena police urged the driver to come forward.

Los Angeles County coroner’s officials have not released the Ford driver’s name pending notification of kin.

The incident follows another illegal street race on Feb. 26 in Chatsworth in which two spectators were killed.

In that crash, Henry Michael Gevorgyan is charged with driving a Ford Mustang that plowed into a crowd of people watching him race another car near Canoga Avenue and Plummer Street, police said.

Wilson Wong, 50, of Torrance, and Eric Siguenza, 26, of Los Angeles were killed and a third person was injured.

Anyone with details about Tuesday’s crash was urged to call Gardena police traffic investigators at (310) 217-9635 or (310) 217-6189 or the front desk at (310) 217-9670.
