Bicyclist lapses into unconsciousness after scuffle with S.D. police

SAN DIEGO -- A 51-year-old man who had been riding a bicycle lapsed into unconsciousness after a brief scuffle with police who detained him for a traffic violation, police said Thursday.

The incident, which occured in the Stockton neighborhood, began with the man seeking to flee from police. After a “brief struggle,’’ he was arrested for resisting arrest, police said.

While the man was being processed at police headquarters, officers noticed that he was unconscious and called paramedics, police said.

“The prisoner never regained consciousness and was transported to a local hospital,” according to Lt. Manuel Del Toro of the homicide squad.

Late Thursday, police said the man remained unconscious and his family was being notified.

During the arrest, a “quantity of narcotics” was found in a pocket of the man’s pants, police said.
