L.A. County supervisor rivals Sheila Kuehl, Bobby Shriver debate tonight
Los Angeles County supervisorial rivals Sheila Kuehl and Bobby Shriver will debate tonight in Pacoima, focusing on healthcare, education and other regional social service issues.
OneLA, a coalition of faith, labor and community groups, is hosting the forum. It begins at 6 p.m. at Mary Immaculate Church, 10390 Remick Ave., Pacoima.
The candidates are competing to replace retiring veteran Zev Yaroslavsky, who has represented the Westside and much of the San Fernando Valley on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for two decades. Kuehl served in the state Legislature for 14 years and says her experience there prepares her for the job.
Shriver, a former Santa Monica mayor and council member, has stressed his local government background, making the case that fresh ideas come from cities, not the state.
The winner will join a five-member board that oversees a $26.5-billion budget and sets policy on prisons, county-owned arts institutions and delivery of health, foster care, mental health and homeless services.
