Pomona officer shoots, wounds man with gun

A Pomona police officer shot and injured a man he was chasing on foot Friday night after the man aimed a gun at the officer, authorities said Saturday.

Pomona Police Department officers assigned to a joint gang suppression team, along with Los Angeles County district attorney investigators, were patrolling in the 300 block of East Center Street when they saw the man in a “heated argument” with another person, according to the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department’s homicide bureau, which is investigating the shooting.

After the argument, the man rode away on a bicycle, and Pomona police tried to stop him.

As one of the officers got out of his vehicle, he told the man to stop, but the man kept riding westbound on Center Street. The officer ran after the man as another officer and a district attorney investigator chased him in their vehicle.

At one point, the man, a 32-year-old Pomona resident, made a U-turn and began to ride toward the officer who was pursuing him on foot, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

The man took a .357-magnum revolver from his waistband and pointed it at the officer, who fired his duty weapon and struck the man multiple times in his upper torso, the sheriff’s statement said. The revolver was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition. His name was not released.
