L.A. commuters stuck on 5 Freeway after truck spills molasses

Share

A big rig hauling molasses gummed up the morning commute around downtown early Wednesday after colliding with another vehicle on the southbound 5 Freeway near Boyle Heights.

Authorities shut down the southbound transition to the westbound 10 Freeway after the vehicle that collided with the truck overturned, backing up traffic beyond the 110 Freeway as crews worked to clean up the mess.

The number of injuries involved in the crash could not immediately be confirmed.

The transition was expected to be closed until at least 7:30 a.m. as officers investigate the collision, which occurred about 5:48 a.m. at the connector, said California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada.

Crews would also apparently have to clear the roadway of an unknown amount of syrup that spilled out of the truck, according to a CHP incident log.

A SigAlert was issued for the crash at 6:12 a.m.
