Los Feliz house fire reveals possible pot-growing operation

A fire Friday in a Los Feliz home has led to an investigation into a possible marijuana-growing operation.

The blaze, in the 3900 block of West Sunset Drive, began around 6 p.m. when about 100 small butane canisters ignited, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

An attached garage became fully engulfed in flames, which then spread to a bedroom of the three-story hillside home, said department spokesman Erik Scott, who tweeted out details of the incident. Two vehicles also burned.

Authorities reported no injuries.

At the scene, firefighters discovered dozens of marijuana plants. News footage shot from overhead revealed what appeared to be marijuana plants in an empty swimming pool, which had apparently been covered by a tarp. The plants in the pool area were not burned.

It took more than 50 firefighters to knock down the blaze and prevent it from spreading across the hillside neighborhood.

Early reports from the scene talked of hearing explosions from inside the residence.

The first reports listed an address on Sanborn Avenue, but the Fire Department soon corrected the street of the incident.
