Toddler burned after climbing into a fire pit at Dockweiler State Beach

A 2-year-old girl is recovering from burns to her hands and feet after she climbed into a fire pit Saturday at a Playa del Rey beach.

The girl was taken from Dockweiler State Beach to Centinela Hospital Medical Center after the incident was reported to L.A. County fire officials at 2:08 p.m.

There was no active fire in the fire pit, but the coals were still hot, said L.A. County Fire Capt. Brian Jordan.

“The key thing here is not the hot coals,” Jordan said. “It’s supervision of children. You don’t let kids in the fire pit, period. When you go to the beach, you need to watch your children. If you’re not going to watch your children, don’t go to the beach.”

He said children should be kept at least 20 to 25 feet away from fire pits. Anyone using one of the fire pits should wear nonflammable clothing and keep water handy in case of burns, Jordan said.

In other Fourth of July incidents, county firefighters responded to two drowning calls.

A 7-year-old girl in La Canada Flintridge was breathing but vomiting water when firefighters responded to the 4:46 p.m. call. She was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Jordan said.

Firefighters also responded to a 12:04 p.m. call from Castaic Lake, where a 5-year-boy had been pulled from the lower lagoon but was still breathing. No further details were available.

An adult male suffered a blown eardrum in Paradise Cove after someone exploded fireworks near him, Jordan said. Jordan reminded the public that private fireworks were illegal in the city of L.A. and in unincorporated L.A. County.
