Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Eureka, Calif.

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Saturday afternoon nine miles from Eureka, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 1:33 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of 18 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was nine miles from McKinleyville, Calif., 10 miles from Arcata, Calif. and 11 miles from Bayside, Calif.

In the past 10 days, there have been no earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
