People spending Labor Day weekend in the San Francisco Bay Area are going to have a little trouble getting around, with several construction projects and a concert expected to cause some transit closures and snarl traffic.

From Saturday through Monday, BART will close its West Oakland Station and will have no service across the bay between San Francisco and Oakland while workers repair a section of track. The Embarcadero, SoMa, Mission Bay and downtown areas will be hit hardest by the closures, officials said.

“If you have to be there, we recommend making the trip by foot, bike or bus,” the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said in a statement. “Driving and parking in the area will require extra patience.”

While transbay service is shut down, BART will provide free lifeline bus services between 19th Street in Oakland and the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco. Delays of one to two hours per trip are expected.

Traffic officials have advised people to plan ahead, avoid unnecessary transbay travel and, if needed, find alternate means of transportation across the bay such as ferries and AC Transit service.

The T Third, K Ingleside, E Embarcadero, F Market and N Judah rail lines will also be affected by projects, officials said.

And if the holiday weekend wasn’t reason enough for a traffic jam, more than 50,000 people are expected to pack into AT&T Park on Saturday for a Billy Joel concert.

Officials suggest that people avoid downtown San Francisco and avoid using the Bay Bridge in the two hours before and after the event. Instead, they recommend taking public transit, taxi, bicycles or walking.
