Motorcyclist dies while fleeing police in Burbank

A motorcyclist who was fleeing from police in Burbank early Saturday died when he ran into a fire hydrant and a light pole.

Coroner officials identified the motorcyclist as 40-year-old Clayton Griggsby of Pasadena.

The fatal crash occurred about 2:48 a.m. at the intersection of Riverside and Bob Hope drives, according to a statement from the Burbank Police Department.

An officer near the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Buena Vista Street saw a motorcycle skid halfway through the intersection after nearly hitting a vehicle stopped at a red light, police said.

The officer attempted to pull over the motorcycle driver, who sped away, driving into oncoming traffic. The officer stopped the pursuit because of the motorcyclist’s reckless driving.

Several minutes later, the officer discovered the motorcyclist had struck a fire hydrant and a light pole.

Burbank firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene, police said.

Police are investigating the crash and ask that witnesses call the Burbank Police Department’s Traffic Bureau at (818) 238-3100.
