Most 210 Freeway lanes in Pasadena reopen after big rigs crash
Most lanes of the eastbound 210 Freeway in Pasadena, where two big rigs collided and triggered a transportation nightmare, were reopened Thursday night.
The California Highway Patrol said three of five lanes on the freeway near Allen Avenue were opened shortly before 10 p.m. But traffic was still backed up for about a mile, according to television news footage.
The CHP said it was not sure when the other two lanes on freeway would be opened.
One of the big rigs smashed through the center divider and overturned on the railroad tracks adjacent to the freeway before catching fire around 1 p.m., officials said.
The damage forced service on Gold Line trains that use that track to be canceled between the Sierra Madre Villa and Lake stations. The freeway gridlock also helped snarl adjacent freeway traffic.
One of the big rig drivers was seriously injured. The other escaped with minor injuries, according to Pasadena Fire spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.
