L.A. County sheriff’s officials close jails to visitors for security assessment
Prompted by the escape of an inmate from the Men’s Central Jail downtown, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials closed all three of the department’s jails to visitors Saturday to allow for a detailed security assessment.
An unidentified inmate assaulted sheriff’s officials at the Central Jail on Friday before fleeing from the facility’s visiting area shortly after 2 p.m., said sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader. The security assessment is focused on the visiting areas of all three downtown jails.

The temporary closure is “not necessarily a lockdown,” Schrader said. “They just want to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
The escapee fled the jail on foot before deputies caught him near Rosabell and Vignes streets, she said.
Three deputies involved in the pursuit suffered minor injuries, Schrader said.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries he suffered trying to climb through barbed wire and falling off a wall, she said.
