The scruffy look is getting scruffier.

Tony Hale, Will Forte, Jimmy Kimmel and Ryan Seacrest were among the men who showed off varying takes on the unshaven look at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.

We’re not talking about well-maintained beards and mustaches. Instead the look fell somewhere between a 5’ o’clock shadow and full-on scraggle and can be classified as simply “unruly scruff.”

It was most apparent when Kimmel and Seacrest were exchanging banter during a red carpet interview and the usually well-trimmed E! host had some visible overgrowth in the form of bushier hair and a burgeoning beard. Kimmel’s facial hair status was at about the same stage.

“I’m trying to grow a thick, manly beard,” he said to Seacrest. “The toughest part is the maintenance, and then it goes up your lips and up your nose.”

Hale, who took home the award for supporting actor in a comedy for his role in “Veep,” boasted unruly scruff that was definitely teetering into beard territory.

Then there was Forte, whose role in “Last Man on Earth” calls for him to sport a long beard. He went clearly beyond the norm and practically into ZZ Top territory.
