Venice Film Festival lineup includes David Gordon Green, Fatih Akin

Andrew Niccol’s military drama “Good Kill,” David Gordon Green’s ex-con tale “Manglehorn” and Abel Ferrara’s biopic “Pasolini” are among the films joining Alejandro González Iñárritu’s black comedy “Birdman” in competition at the 71st Venice International Film Festival, organizers announced Thursday.

The festival, which runs Aug. 27-Sept. 6, features a lineup of 55 films, 20 of which are in competition. “Birdman” was previously announced as the opener.

Other films vying for the Golden Lion award include Joshua Oppenheimer’s documentary “The Look of Silence,” a follow-up to “The Act of Killing”; David Oelhoffen’s “Loin des Hommes,” a historical drama starring Viggo Mortensen; Mario Martone’s “Il Giovane Favoloso” about the poet Giacomo Leopardi; and Fatih Akin’s “The Cut,” a drama starring Tahar Rahim of “A Prophet.”

Among the selections screening out of competition are James Franco’s “The Sound and the Fury,” adapted from the William Faulkner novel; Peter Bogdanovich’s “She’s Funny That Way,” a comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson; Barry Levinson’s “The Humbling,” based on the Philip Roth novel and starring Al Pacino (who also plays the lead in “Manglehorn”); and Lisa Cholodenko’s HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge,” starring Frances McDormand and based on the Pulitzer-winning book by Elizabeth Strout.

Composer Alexandre Desplat will lead a judging panel that includes British actor Tim Roth, Palestinian director Elia Suleiman and Indian American novelist Jhumpa Lahiri.
