‘Empire’s’ Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard to host Fox holiday special

Share

Continuing in the long tradition of Sonny and Cher and, I guess, Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, “Empire’s” Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson are hosting a musical holiday variety show.

“Taraji and Terrence’s White Hot Holidays” on Fox will feature a new duet by Henson and Howard, who co-starred (as well as sang) in the 2005 film “Hustle & Flow” before playing divorced couple Lucious and Cookie Lyon on “Empire.”

Sadly, the pair will almost certainly not reprise “Hustle & Flow’s” Oscar-winning song “Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” so fans will have to console themselves by rewatching Henson and Howard’s performance of the song on Spike’s “Lip Sync Battle.”

Music superstars Mary J. Blige and John Legend are scheduled to perform, as is actor Jamie Foxx, among other surprise guests, which almost certainly means cast members from other, lower-rated Fox shows.

The special looks to take advantage of the continued popularity of “Empire,” which Fox reports having an average of 22.9 million viewers on a weekly basis, across multiple platforms.

The series is scheduled to air on Fox on Dec. 9 at 9 p.m., one week after the fall finale of “Empire,” airing Dec. 2.
