Mindy Kaling’s Wreath Witherspoon hits with social media, Reese herself

Share

Deck the halls with Wreath Witherspoon! Reese Witherspoon has become a viral holiday decoration thanks to Mindy Kaling and “The Mindy Project” writers room.

Behold, the pun-happy ornament inspired by the Oscar winner, which made itself known to the world in the Fox comedy’s winter finale. Kaling’s pop culture-fixated Dr. Mindy Lahiri unveiled the decoration for her boyfriend Danny (Chris Messina), dubbing it “the nicest thing” in his apartment. (And perhaps one of the most underrated one-liners of the episode.)

Naturally, that pithy prototype -- a twiggy DIY Christmas wreath adorned with several non-mugshot photos of Witherspoon -- has taken on a digital life of its own and captured the attention of the “Wild” star. However, Mindy’s Rihanna tree-topper did not fare as well.

“#NewTrendAlert?? The many variations of #WreathWitherspoon via @mindykaling!!!Haha....Love it!!!” the “Legally Blonde” actress tweeted.

Wreath Witherspoon, presumably the brainchild of Kaling and “Mindy Project” writer Charlie Grandy, immediately trended on Twitter and inspired a flurry of similar at-home versions displayed on Instagram.

Kaling also highlighted “just a few” others she’d seen on Instagram this week and gave a Willie Geist-inspired wreath to the “Today” show anchor.

The ladies’ lovefest continued on social media as Kaling complimented Witherspoon’s turn as avid hiker Cheryl Strayed in “Wild.” Witherspoon then thanked Kaling by calling her a “brilliant lady.”
