“Being Mary Jane,” starring Gabrielle Union as a single African American woman juggling a hectic personal and professional life, caused a big splash last year when it debuted as BET’s first scripted drama.

But the return of the series this week was more of a ripple than a splash.

Viewership for the second season launch of “Being Mary Jane” fell off almost 30% from last season. The episode attracted 3.6 million viewers compared with the 5.2 million viewers who tuned in to last season’s premiere.

The series, from the husband and wife team of Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, has already been renewed for a third season.
