Fans of NBC’s “Hannibal” may have been surprised at the conclusion of the show’s series finale when a modern song appeared on the score for the first time in the show’s history.

The song, an original composition by series composer Brian Reitzell, is titled “Love Crime” and performed by recording artist Siouxsie Sioux.

“For years I wanted to do a song with Siouxsie. She hasn’t been in the recording studio in years, but I just thought her voice was the one voice I could really hear singing a song for the show. I had the idea literally years ago and it kind of magically worked the way that it worked,” Reitzell said in an interview Friday. “I asked [her manager] about her doing something for the show and it turns out she was a big fan.”

When composing the song, Reitzell didn’t realize that what he was writing would be one of the final notes of the series. “I wrote the music for [Siouxsie], in November of last year, thinking we would just make a song. I thought that we would maybe just use it for marketing going into season three.”

But scheduling difficulties delayed the project to the point that using it as the season’s grace note just made sense.

As for whether fans can expect the song to be released anytime soon, Reitzell was unsure, saying, “It’s sort of a double-edged sword. When you work on these projects, you’re rushing to get it into the show and then you can’t release it because you haven’t been able to do the audio-only portion of it. It’s tricky, but we’ll get it out there somehow.”
