‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’ to set sail summer 2017

“Pirates of the Caribbean 5” is charting a course for July 7, 2017.

The fifth installment of Disney’s blockbuster franchise starring Johnny Depp as the swashbuckling Capt. Jack Sparrow had been scheduled for release in July 2015 but was unmoored from that date last September to give the filmmakers time to work on the script.

The new film, often referred to with the secondary title “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” is being directed by Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, whose seafaring 2012 adventure film “Kon-Tiki” was nominated for a foreign-language Oscar. Jeff Nathanson is writing the screenplay.

On its new date, “Pirates 5” will come six years after the series’ most recent installment, “On Stranger Tides.” That film was not well reviewed, with some critics complaining of franchise fatigue, but it surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

The four “Pirates” movies have combined to gross about $3.73 billion worldwide.
