Amtrak train strikes car in Camarillo; no serious injuries reported

An Amtrak train bound for Los Angeles on Sunday night struck a car that had been left on the tracks in an agricultural area just outside Camarillo, officials said.

The crash occurred about 8 p.m. at the intersection of 5th Street and Pleasant Valley Road, less than a mile from the Camarillo Metrolink station, said Mike Lindbery, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

There were 85 people on board the train, including employees, Lindbery said. Two people were in the car, but both jumped out before impact. No one involved in the crash was seriously injured.

“At this point, we have no idea why they were stuck there,” Lindbery said. “We don’t know what the mechanism was, or whether this was an accident.

The incident is the second car-train crash in less than a week in Ventura County. Sunday’s crash site is less than 10 miles away from the grade-crossing where a Metrolink train struck a Ford F-450 pickup Tuesday morning.

The last reported crash at the Camarillo location was in 1995, between an Amtrak train and a truck-trailer stopped in the crossing, according to federal records. No one was injured in that incident.
