Avery Johnson gets $6.1 million for Texas-sized golf estate
Avery Johnson, nicknamed the “Little General” during his playing days in the NBA, has sold his mansion-estate in The Woodlands, Texas, for $6.1 million – about 32% less than his original commanded price.
The Mediterranean-style estate, designed by Jaurequi Architect and completed in 2005, backs the 17th hole of the Jack Nicklaus-designed course at Carlton Woods with a full-sized basketball court and a tiered pool on about two acres.
The residence of about 14,400 square feet is entered through a vaulted foyer lined with stone pillars. The two-story floor plan sports a collection of Old World details including hand-scraped wood flooring, stone accents, trussed beams and frescos.
Among highlights is a double-height great room with a tall stone fireplace, a game room and a movie theater complete with concession stand. A two-story library/office clad in wood paneling has a spiral staircase.
The master suite, one of seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, comes outfitted with a sitting room, a fireplace and a large soaking tub set inside stone pillars.
Outdoors, a tall double-sided fireplace divides an outdoor patio with a kitchen, living room and patio area.
Johnson, 49, played 16 seasons in the NBA for seven different teams, including all three Texas franchises, and won a championship with the Spurs in 1999. As a head coach, he led the Mavericks to four straight seasons with 50-plus wins and the franchise’s first NBA Finals appearance. He currently works as a basketball analyst for ESPN.
Records show that Johnson purchased the estate in 2006. He had asked as much as $8.995 million for the property last year.
