Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe’s ‘Nice Guys’ stakes out June 2016 release

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe will be on the case come summer 2016. Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that it has scheduled the duo’s upcoming neo-noir thriller “The Nice Guys” for release June 17, 2016.

Set in 1970s Los Angeles, the film is to tell the story of Holland March (Gosling), a private detective down on his luck, and hired bruiser Jackson Healy (Crowe) as they investigate the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a fading porn star.

“Iron Man 3” helmer Shane Black is directing “The Nice Guys,” which is set to start shooting in the fall, from a script he wrote with Anthony Bagarozzi. Joel Silver is producing, with Ken Kao, Hal Sadoff and Michael Malone serving as executive producers.

Silver, who first worked with Black on “Lethal Weapon,” said in a statement, “Ever since we did ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,’ I’ve been eager to work with Shane again, and with this film we made it happen. It’s a terrific script written in Shane’s great cinematic voice. With Russell and Ryan on board, I know we’re in for another wild ride.”

Crowe, Gosling and Black are all veterans of crime capers. Crowe starred in “L.A. Confidential” and “American Gangster,” Gosling appeared in “Gangster Squad” and Black lent his dark, sardonic wit to the aforementioned “Weapon” as screenwriter and “Kiss Kiss” as director.

Black also recently signed on to direct Sony’s adaptation of the long-running pulp book series “The Destroyer.”

“The Nice Guys” is currently slated to open against the animated movies “Finding Dory” and “How to Train Your Dragon 3.”
