Right-hander Michael Wacha will replace Justin Masterson in the St. Louis Cardinals’ rotation Thursday and for his first start since mid-June.

Manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday that Wacha, a breakout rookie star last year who was the National League Championship Series most valuable player, will be limited to around 60 pitches at Milwaukee. He’s 5-5 with a 2.79 earned-run average in 15 starts and has been on the 15-day disabled list because of a right shoulder stress reaction.

Brewers’ Carlos Gomez won’t start for one week

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez has been diagnosed with a sprained left wrist and will be out of the starting lineup for at least one week.

Gomez injured the wrist swinging a bat in Milwaukee’s 15-5 loss to San Francisco on Sunday.

The two-time All Star will remain available as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement, but he will not swing a bat until Sunday.

Gomez is batting .281 with 21 home runs and 29 stolen bases.

Season is over for Reds’ Homer Bailey

The Cincinnati Reds have moved right-hander Homer Bailey to the 60-day DL, officially ending his season.

Bailey has an elbow injury described as a strained right flexor mass tendon. The Reds had hoped Bailey would be able to rejoin the rotation this month, but that won’t happen.

Manager Bryan Price said Tuesday that a second MRI exam did not show enough improvement to where Bailey could get on a throwing program. Price said surgery is being discussed.

Bailey was put on the DL on Aug. 16. He was 9-6 with a 3.71 ERA in 23 starts.

Blue Jays activate Brandon Morrow

The Toronto Blue Jays activated right-hander Brandon Morrow and first baseman Dan Johnson from the disabled list.

The team also announced that infielder Brett Lawrie was transferred from the 15- to the 60-day DL, which ends his regular season. Lawrie was put on the DL in early August because of an oblique injury.

Morrow had been sidelined since early May because of an injured right finger. Johnson sat out a month because of a strained left hamstring.

Rangers set record for most players used

With left-hander Derek Holland making a start against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night, he is the 60th player used this season by the Texas Rangers, which sets a major league record.

The Cleveland Indians and San Diego Padres each used 59 players in 2002, and the Padres did it also in 2008.
