The Ducks moved to patch another hole in their defense Friday, acquiring veteran defenseman Eric Brewer from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The trade was announced along with news that Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin suffered a broken finger in Tuesday’s home victory over the Calgary Flames and will be sidelined four to six weeks.

The team also placed defenseman Clayton Stoner (mumps) on injured reserve. Stoner missed his third game Friday, but could be activated at any time, with Saturday’s game in San Jose a possibility.

Anaheim sent the Lightning a third-round pick in next year’s entry draft for Brewer, 35, a former captain of the St. Louis Blues (2008-11) who was on Canada’s gold medal-winning Olympic team.

Brewer, a 1997 first-round draft pick of the New York Islanders, has played in 982 NHL games and has contributed four assists with 18 penalty minutes in 17 games.

He’s expected to provide a veteran’s knowledge, depth and leadership to the Ducks and is considered more than a fill-in. He’s earning $3.75 million this season.

In the interim, the Ducks summoned 23-year-old rookie Jesse Blacker from minor-league Norfolk on Friday to play in the afternoon game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
