Scene change for Hollywood home built for Agnes Ayres

A Hollywood Hills home built for prolific silent film actress Agnes Ayres has sold for $1.88 million.

The 1930 Spanish Revival, with period details and a turreted stone entry, came on the market in July for $1.998 million and was under contract by the end of October.

Before the recent sale, the property went for $989,000 in 2004 and $584,000 in 1994. In the late 1980s, the stone and stucco home was priced at $1.35 million, according to The Times.

The 3,573-square-foot floor plan features a step-down living room complete with beamed ceilings, hardwood flooring and a stacked-stone fireplace. Detailed corbels, wrought iron finishes and arched doorways are in keeping with the original style.

A cook’s kitchen, a formal dining room, a family/media room, four bedrooms and 3.25 bathrooms are among the living spaces. French doors open to landscaped grounds with a covered entertainer’s space. Elsewhere are an outdoor dining area and barbecue.

Susan Andrews of John Aaroe Group was the listing agent. Edward Fitz of The Agency represented the buyer on the sale.

Ayres, who died in 1940 at 42, rose to fame in the role of Lady Diana Mayo in “The Sheik” opposite Rudolph Valentino in 1921 and the 1926 sequel, “The Son of the Sheik.” Later in her career, she worked in vaudeville while also dabbling in Los Angeles real estate.
