A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting near the headquarters of the Santa Ana Police Department on Friday, authorities said.

Officers who were searching for a robbery suspect spotted a man sitting inside a car who matched the description around 11 a.m. and tried to make contact with him, Santa Ana Police Department spokesman Anthony Bertagna said.

Bertagna said the encounter led an officer shooting the suspect to death, though it remained unclear what prompted the shooting.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bertagna said the officers have returned to police headquarters where they will be interviewed by detectives and investigators from the Orange County district attorney’s office, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

The shooting took place on the 1000 block of West 3rd Street.

The incident marked the second officer-involved shooting in a week in Santa Ana.

Last Friday, a 50-year-old man was shot and critically injured after allegedly stabbing a woman and then refusing to drop a knife after he was approached by an officer.

Police said Francisco Alvarez was clutching the knife while walking in the middle of the road near the intersection of Susan and Harvard streets when he was approached by the officer.

The 21-year-old woman was critically injured.
